A Fond Farewell To Winter

Hi, everyone!

Greetings from Black Butte Ranch, where we're starting to swap out our ski poles for golf clubs and tennis racquets. Soon the outdoor pools will be open for business, the covers will be pulled from the barbeques, and the air will be filled with the sweet sweet smells of springtime.

A Fond Farewell to Winter

We embrace the warmer seasons here at Black Butte Ranch, but it's no secret that the winter months here are simply magical. We spent plenty of time hiking in the enchanted groves of our favorite neighbor, the Deschutes National Forest, and carved up the slopes at Hoodoo Ski Area and Mt. Bachelor. We even took a wintry spin on the fatbikes available for rent here at the Ranch – the giant-tired bicycles made especially for the snow. It's a really great workout, and a neat way to explore more territory if you're like me and never quite got the hang of cross-country skiing.

This February, we also hopped over to Bend for the annual Oregon Winterfest celebration. Right downtown in the heart of it all, they had something for absolutely everyone: live music, ice sculptures, a fire pit competition, a wine walk, a pop-up rail to keep snowboarders busy, a fun run for the grownups, and a cocoa run for the little ones! And food. So much food. All the food. It was such a wonderful couple days, and an event you should definitely check out when you're staying with use next winter.

Exciting Times Ahead

To the links! For a lot of folks, the end of winter means one thing, and one thing alone: golf is in the air. Well, you're in luck! Our Big Meadow Course is open for business and awaiting your drives and putts. Our Glaze Meadow Course opens for three days April 28-30 during the Central Oregon Shootout, and the course opens for the season May 12. The Shootout is one of the Ranch's signature golf events, as is the Father's Day Classic (June 17), also right around the corner. More info on these tourneys at 541-595-1500. Lodging for these events fills up fast, so book your rental today!

If you're less into bunkers and more into broncos, the annual Sisters Rodeo is getting ready to kick up some local dust. June 9 to 11, you can experience one of Sister's most legendary and entertaining events. If you can believe it, this is the 77th year of bull riding, barrel racing, and steer wrestling in Sisters! And Saturday morning June 10 is a parade for the ages. The Sisters Rodeo is truly a one-of-a-kind experience not to be missed, one that draws crowds from all over. It's also great event for families, offering something for cowpokes of all ages.

Featured activity: Proxy Falls

Hiking Proxy Falls is an amazing activity, especially in the springtime with the flowers blooming and the mountain runoff at full force. For hikers with kids, it offers that perfect pairing of adjectives: enchanting and easy! The trail is an easy 1.25-mile loop up to Proxy Falls, which is actually an upper and lower set of waterfalls. Together, they're one of Oregon's most photographed falls, with photographers puzzling as to how to capture all the amazing in one frame. The best part is that the lower falls form one of those unique diffuse waterfalls that your can go right up to and experience for yourself.

The Proxy Falls Trail a pretty well trafficked route, but more so in the summer; therefore, we recommend it in for spring, especially on a weekday morning if you can swing it. While appropriate for kids, it's not accessible for wheelchairs or strollers.

You can find the marked Proxy Falls trailhead (and restrooms) along Highway 242. Keep in mind Highway 242 from Sisters closes seasonally for winter and can open as late as July, though the lower gate normally opens in late April for car access to the trailhead. Be prepared to pay a $5 Forest Service parking fee.
