Summertime At Black Butte

Hi, everyone!

Greetings from Black Butte Ranch, where we're continually thankful for a gaggle of lakes and creeks and swimming pools to plunk into when the thermometer climbs! Aquatic fun aside, it's been a great summer for biking, hiking, and trail riding. The other day we snapped this shot of some horseback riders exploring the Ranch on a tour with Black Butte Stables. We call this a Black Butte Traffic Jam. And we'll certainly take it over I-5 rush hour any day of the week!

Summer Favorites

The last couple months have been a blast, as a couple of seminal Sisters events unfolded with their usual majesty and good cheer. In June, of course, the Sisters Rodeo rolled into town for three days of cattle and cowboys, bulls and broncs, food and fun, dust and delight. If you've never taken in this one-of-a-kind experience, it's a family-friendly extravaganza that's not to be missed. Mark it down for June 2018!

And as you're looking forward to next year, if quilting's your thing circle the second Saturday of July. The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show impressed once again this year. To be honest, even if you don't know a quilt from a top sheet this display of skill and imagination will leave you in awe. This year, there were over 1300 quilts on display of incredible artistry and variety. It's part art gallery and part craft fair, gathering quilts and quilt enthusiasts from around the globe for a unique and wonderful event.

September on the Links

It's no secret one of the great draws to Black Butte Ranch is golf, as we boast two of the finest courses in the region. Spread throughout the more casual outings on our Glaze Meadow and Big Meadow courses, the Ranch also hosts a number of tournaments each season. One of our absolute favorites comes around every September: Grapes & Golf! The Ranch's premier couples event brings together these two pillars of relaxation for three days of magic (just so we're clear, the grapes come in the form of wine).

From September 14-16, enjoy two tournament rounds of golf, a wine and hors d'oeuvres reception, an exquisite four-course wine dinner, tee prizes, and a BBQ awards luncheon, and much more. More info on Grapes & Golf at (541) 595–1292. Vacation rentals are going fast for that weekend, so book today!

Featured Activity:
Hike to Black Butte Lookout

The hike up to Black Butte Lookout is an absolute must for every visitor to the Ranch. It's a moderately strenuous 3.8-mile hike from the trailhead to the lookout tower and back, but the payoff is well worth it. You'll have spectacular, panoramic views of the Sisters area—including a mountain goat's-eye view of Black Butte Ranch itself. The only drawback is that you can’t see the famous profile of Black Butte… because you're on it!

It can get hot in the summer (much of the trail is South-facing), but there's usually a nice cross breeze at the top to cool things down. As the trail gets steeper at the end, it's generally not recommended for kids. That said, kids have done it. Just bring plenty of H2O, as well as fun and rewarding snacks to keep morale high.

To get to the trailhead, take Highway 22 west of Sisters 5.5 miles to Indian Ford Campground, near milepost 95. Turn north onto Green Ridge Road 11. After 3.8 miles, turn left onto gravel Road 1110 for 5.1 miles and continue to a parking area at the end of the line. Note that you'll need a Northwest Forest Pass to park ($5/day or $30/season). There's a pay box on-site for your convenience.
